Navigation training for Ukrainian refugees

assessment day

In August, six Ukrainian residents from Coatbridge successfully completed the NNAS Bronze Navigator Award. Their journey of gaining the nationally recognised qualification (SCQF level 4, 2 credit points) was supported by staff from the North Lanarkshire Council Adult Learning and Resettlement team.

From June to August, the group completed mapped walks in Palacerigg, Drumpellier Country Park and Dalzell Estate. Local orienteering maps, country park maps and OS maps were all used for the walks. The learners were shown how to use MapRun6 app to complete an orienteering course in Glasgow Green, with a homework task to complete in Drumpellier park using MapRun6. The group gained map reading skills and confidence in exploring the local lowland countryside.

The next step for some of the learners is to begin training to qualify as Lowland Walking Leaders. The building of the capacity of the refugees will enable them to have their own competent group leaders to plan and organise health walks in North Lanarkshire and beyond.
