Outdoor Discovery Awards are here!

It’s been a long time coming, but the NNAS is pleased to finally announce the unveiling of the Outdoor Discovery Awards (ODA).

The ODA continues with the core ethos of the preceding Young Navigator Star Awards (YNSA): Encouraging exploration and journeying in local areas using simple maps such as street maps, pictorial park maps and orienteering maps.

The awards are now aimed at all age groups and abilities.

What this means for existing YNSA Providers:

YNSA Providers that are already registered with NNAS can continue delivering YNSA until the end of the YNSA course they are currently running, or up until the end of July, whichever comes soonest.  From that point onward the award will be known as the Outdoor Discovery Award and only ODA certificates will be issued.

If you wish to deliver ODA you will need to purchase the new Outdoor Discovery Handbook.  It costs £15 and can be purchased from the NNAS office or directly from Harvey Maps, the publisher.  Harvey Maps offer a discount for bulk orders of books, maps & resources.  Please contact Juliet on 01786 841202 or email jh@harveymaps.co.uk

The book is a real improvement on the original YNSA Teacher’s guide – full syllabus, teaching tips, preparation & equipment, and gives the group leader much greater guidance through the activities required to achieve the awards.

All group leaders operating under existing YNSA Providers will need to undertake the NNAS Tutor Award within three years of July 2019, i.e. by the end of July 2022.

When your annual registration renewal comes around the fee will increase from the current level of £15 up to £25.

How to order ODA certificates:

To obtain ODA certificates (and badges, once available) you will use an online order form that will be found on our website here soon.  Certain anonymous data is required to be given to NNAS about ODA participants and courses:

  • Age range, gender and ethnicity of participants
  • Ratio of participants to group leaders
  • County course delivery took place

Other data may be required at future dates but will remain anonymous information, i.e. no names required.  This information will be kept in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Certificates will be supplied blank for course leaders to complete.
